Our Base For The Week

The Catamaran

The catamaran was designed for four guests and we were a party of three. It was quite cramped even for three of us. Two of the rooms had their own bathrooms and two had to share a bathroom. The catamaran was well past its useful life and needed constant maintenance by the skipper to continually fix: -

  • Water supply
  • Shower (or bucket when it didn't work)
  • Toilets not flushing
  • Electrics failing
  • We had rain on two nights and the rain leaked in everywhere - even through the light fittings!

Not much headroom but at least a skylight

The Food

The food was provided by Maradonna and Lauren. They worked miracles with the tiny kitchen and, according to Kevin and Garry, provided the best food they have had on a fishing trip. They treated us to: -

  • Zebu steaks (subspecies of domestic cattle)
  • Spaghetti Bolognese
  • Calamari (big pieces)
  • Tuna goujons
  • Chicken dinner
  • Many fish-based starters. Often several courses per meal.

Calamari

During the day we ate what we caught. This was in the form of Carpaccio. Throughout the trip this was made from Tuna, Rainbow Runner and Captain Fish. This was another first for me and I enjoyed it.

Daily Schedule

Breakfast was served at 6am requiring that we were up and about by around 5:30am. That gave us time to make changes to our fishing gear, eat breakfast and be ready for a 7am departure. The journey to the fishing grounds took on average 1 hour and we moved position several times during the day depending on the fishing being done. While we were out fishing, the catamaran sometimes moved to another sheltered bay where we would rendezvous around 5:30pm (just before dark). Several local villagers paddled their dugout canoes to the catamaran to see what we had caught and take away their evening meal.
